Loved Back to Life (Book Review)

I wish this book had been available years ago…

A triumphant testimony- and a very public battle with depression and anxiety- that inspires others to persevere in Sheila Walsh’s memoir: Loved Back to Life, How I Found the Courage to Live Free.

She had everything going for her. A successful singing career. A job as co-host for the Christian Broadcasting Network’s popular television program The 700 Club. She should have been on top of the world, but as readers dive in they will soon find out that wasn’t the case.

Overwhelmed by the demands of ministry, loneliness, and fear, Sheila falls deeper and deeper into what she describes as a, “dark well”. Afraid of what others will think, Sheila is unable to talk to those around her. When the pressure of trying to look like she has it all together finally becomes too much, Sheila breaks down publicly while conducting an interview on the show. After deciding to seek professional help, she is met with opposition from some of her co-workers. Despite the adversity, Sheila goes on to get the treatment she needs and develops a deeper relationship with God as she allows him to love her back to life.

Sheila’s story tackles concerns such as: Is something wrong with me or is it just in my head? Am I all alone in this battle? What will people think? Can I lead a normal life? Will God ever be able to use me again? Her honesty gives readers a better understanding of what those who suffer from depression and anxiety go through and the stigmas attached to them. Whether you personally have a mental illness or know someone who does, I would recommend you add this book to your reading list.
