When faced with adversity, what or who do you turn too?

Most of us have read or at least heard of Psalm 119. It’s the longest of the Psalms and some bible scholars believe King David was the author of Psalm 119. It has even been referred to as The Treasury Of David. Like many others, it’s probably my favorite passage in the book of Psalms. It’s words encourage and inspire me whenever I read them. I love the way the author poured out his heart in such an honest way on the pages. He admitted his struggles and I admire that.

One verse in particular that has always stood out to me is Psalm 119:103. In this verse the author writes that God’s words are sweeter than honey. With honey readily available today at the local super market most of us probably wouldn’t consider honey a luxury. But according to biblestudytools.com honey was thought to be considered rare at the time. This helps put it into perspective for us why  he chose to write that God’s word was tastier than honey doesn’t it? He considered it more valuable than this highly sought after treat. It’s clear God’s words were treasured.

As we read on a little further we discover that the author clung to God’s words in the face of adversity. In Psalm 119:43 he writes, “Trouble and stress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight.”  No matter what enemies came against him, he stood on the promises and commands found in Gods word. He may have questioned why God would allow his enemies to rise up against him, but he always turned back to the truth and wisdom he found in God’s word.

The declaration in this Psalm encourages us to seek God no matter what we are facing. They remind us that the answers we need are found in the pages of God’s word. And those words contain the truth and wisdom we need to help get us through the tough times. The author of this Psalm faithfully relied on the power in God’s word. Every time a new challenge presented itself he continued to turn to God. We too can stand on the promises and commands found in God’s word.

“Lord I praise you for every promise and command in your word. Thank you for the truth and wisdom that is be found in Psalmist words. Help me to follow his example and turn to you when I’m tempted with sin or faced with adversity. In Jesus’ name Amen!“

    The Psalms are a favorite of mine … and this verse is especially meaningful … as it is the name of my blog! God’s Word is truly a delight … a delicacy. I love how you highlighted that David was real with God … he felt free to question why God would allow certain circumstances in his life, but then fell right back onto His promises and trusted Him.     Kelly Psalm 119 is a treasury of goodness! Thank you for reminding us of the sweetness of God’s word for our soul. There are so many verses that I love but there are a few I can truly relate to since the stroke and everything that has followed. in verse 67 it reads.” Before I was afflicted, I went astray but not I keep your word.” and in verse 71 it says, “It was good for me that I was afflicted, that I may learn your statues.” and finally in verse 74, “May those who fear You see me and be glad because I wait for your word.” The stroke was this best thing that ever happened. My relationship with Christ grows stronger and I pray that people are blessed and encouraged by my testimony for Christ. I love the focus that you have put on this amazing and inspiring chapter in the Bible. May God continue to bless you and yours as you continue to share what God’s word reveals to you.

      Good morning Horace. The verses you mentioned give us a clear picture of what David learned because of his affliction. I’m sorry to hear you had a stroke, but I’m glad you are sharing what God has done though you because of it.     Kelly, I was just reading this morning about Jonathan, Saul’s son, eating honey (complicated and psycho story aside), and twice the passage noted that it brightened his eyes. I loved reading that and now I am appreciating this connection between those words and your own lovely thoughts on the Word. Thank you!

      Hi Michele. I’m glad you brought up Jonathan eating the honey. When I was doing research on honey in the bible I read through that passage. I love when God connects everything together for us like that. He is so good at doing bringing things together for us!
