10 Must Have Devotions That Will Encourage Your Heart

10 devotional books that will inspire your walk with Jesus and encourage your heart.

Looking for a new devotional book to read?

When choosing a devotion I like to get recommendations from family, friends, and fellow writers. And this year I decided to use social media to help me in my quest to find the perfect one. Because Facebook is the place everyone likes to hang out online, I decided to ask for suggestions there.

Here is what I posted: What is your favorite devotional book—one that you would recommend to a friend and also read again yourself?

The results were wonderful! Every book that was suggested is sure to encourage our hearts and inspire us to grow in our walk with Jesus. It’s going to be tough to decide which one to read first.

The following list includes 10 devotional books that come highly recommended by my family, friends, and fellow writers. They are listed in the order in which they were published, beginning with the most recently released selection.

Do You Know You’re Already Amazing Devotional

by Holly Gerth

“This book spoke truth to my heart! Holley’s devotional sets our mind free from the lies the enemy whispers to us. It is definitely a devotional you will want to read again and again!” – Kristy Creamans, Blogger

Songs of Jesus

by Timothy & Kathy Keller

“I have always found such comfort and wisdom from the Psalms. I also love anything written by Timothy Keller. Put the two together and you have a powerful devotional. Tim along with his wife Kathy have managed to highlight each of the Psalms with an entirely fresh and profound light; bringing them into our 21st century lives with the purpose of reminding us that these are the very songs that Jesus learned and also found comfort. I hope you find The Songs of Jesus by Timothy and Kathy Keller as rich as I did and look forward to continuing in 2017.” – Lisa Simmons, Author

1000 Gifts

by Ann Voskamp

“This devotional about finding grace everyday is one I could read year after year because I always need the reminder to be on the look out for God’s gifts in my life. Ann’s daily challenge to identify God’s graces in the ordinary will leave you in awe of God’s intricate love and more aware of His activity in your life.”– Kaitlin Garrison, Blogger

The Power of a Praying Wife Devotional

by Stormie Omartian

When I asked my small group ladies for suggestions, they all agreed anything from the Power of a Praying series by Stormie Omartian is a must have. A few years ago we studied the book The Power of a Praying Wife together as a group and it was life changing for my marriage. The Power Of a Praying Wife Devotional is the perfect companion to the original book and includes 100 additional devotions and prayers to pray over yourself, your husband and your marriage. Jesus Calling

by Sarah Young

Out of all the women I asked, this devotional was by far the most recommended. A friend of mine shared that it speaks to her heart—at exactly the right time—and gives her the encouragement she needs when she’s going through a difficult time. I have read the devotional more than once myself and can honestly say it encouraged me as well. Learn more about Jesus Calling.

Grace for the Moment

by Max Lacado

“I received “Grace for the Moment” by Max Lucado just over 15 years ago as a gift. I keep coming back to it, year after year, for the truths of God’s Word and promises shared in the daily readings. The simple and the profound, woven together, continue to challenge me to draw near to the One who offers me amazing grace for the every moment.” – Stacee Baker, Blogger and Speaker

Experiencing God Day By Day

by Henry & Richard Blackaby

After only reading a few days worth of the devotions, I can understand why Experiencing God Day By Day comes so highly recommended. The daily devotions invite readers to develop a more intimate relationship with God while also remaining relevant and practical to the everyday issues we face as Christ followers.

Diamonds in the Dust

by Joni Eareckson Tada

“What Joni Eareckson Tada writes, I read. . . again and again. Spiritual depth will always come forth from this woman whose “cup” has included forty years of paralysis, breast cancer, and chronic pain. Her devotional Diamonds in the Dust is no exception. Her tenacious faith addresses suffering, perseverance, God’s sovereignty, heaven, and practical Christian living through stories, scripture and prayers. It is a devotional book that will both challenge and change those who are blessed to read.” –Lettie Kirkpatrick-Buress, Author and Speaker

My Utmost Highest

by Oswald Chambers

“My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers may have short, daily devotions but they are not light. I’ve read and re-read this book over the last 16 years and every single time I am challenged with Chambers’ fresh perspective and penetrating truth. So many of the My Utmost devotions have my notes, dates, promises and prayers next to them, chronicling much of my journey with God as a young mom.”– Lisa Apello, Author and Blogger

“In the midst of today’s fast-paced world, the wisdom of Streams in the Desert remains refreshing, relevant and trustworthy.” –quote taken from the back of the book. This timeless classic, originally published in 1925, is still a favorite amongst many.
