A Book Review of Looking Toward the Cross, A 40 Day Easter Journey For Families by Leighann Marquiss
This Easter devotional includes 40 days of devotions and activities for families to participate in together that focus on the life and ministry of Jesus. After reading through the devotions, my daughter and I tried the activity on day one and were really impressed with how well it turned out. I particularly loved how the fun and creative activities helped reinforce the lessons taught in devotions by providing a hands on experience.
Not into hands-on activities? Don’t worry, the activities are optional. You and your children can still enjoy the devotions together as a family.
Although the author has written this book to follow along with the season of Lent, it’s clear her main objective is to prepare our children’s hearts for the Easter message as we point them to Jesus and the cross. Leighann does touch on the five elements observed during Lent which include: Prayer, Penance, Repentance, Almsgiving, and Self-Denial. But as she mentions in her book, self-denial isn’t an active part of this devotional. So whether your family observes the Lenton season or not, I believe this little devotional book would be a great tool to help kids understand the Easter story.
